“I wasn’t starving… the whole time!” Nicole Bruno

Nicole recently completed our 5 week nutrition challenge where she lost 11 lbs, decreased her body fat by 2.8% and lost 8.5 inches. Nicole stated that her favorite part of the challenge is that she was not starving the entire time, she felt full and satisfied so she wasn’t always looking for a snack. See her full story below!

Why did you sign up for the nutrition challenge?

“My husband and I had a baby in August, our eating has got off track. I needed a reset. January is a really stressful time for work so I figured this was a good time to hold myself accountable.”

“Tell us a little bit about your success over the last 5 weeks”

“I’m really happy with my results. I lost almost 11 lbs, I lost 8.5 inches, I feel great and my clothes are fitting much better. The program was so easy to follow. It wasn’t like it was painful for five weeks or like I was depriving myself. It’s so easy to follow.”

What was the first thing that you noticed that this was working?

“For me, I’m a grazer and I like to graze and eat all day long. Two days into it I was like wow I’m not hungry – this is working. This meal plan is great. It almost felt like too much food in the beginning, but I noticed my clothes were starting to fit looser only a few days into it.”

“Are there any results or successes that we as your coaches wouldn’t know?”

“There is two things, one is, even though this is a really stressful time, I felt much calmer throughout January. January is my first time going back to work after my maternity leave so it really could have been stressful and I felt like I kept my calm throughout. The second thing is I have been getting heartburn a lot. I haven’t taken a heart burn pill since I started this challenge.”

“What was the biggest obstacle that was keeping you from healthy before the challenge?”

“Sometimes you just get on a downward spiral. As soon as you start eating sugar and make an excuse, you get out of control. For me I needed a little more discipline and structure and I didn’t really have that.”

How do you feel like the challenge helped provide that structure?

“I liked the trays – the trays make it really easy to measure. You can basically put anything in the trays, so that makes it really easy. The prescription of three meals with your fat. It made it really easy to follow.”

What were the top contributing factors to you having the success that you had?

“I think that I’m really competitive so that’s number one. Number two is money motivates me which Joe would cringe if he heard me say that. I paid some money to do this challenge, I was like this is going to work so that holds me accountable. Also, I just wasn’t happy with the way I felt and looked.”

Are you satisified with your results?

“Yeah! I’m going to keep going.”

Is there anything that you would say to someone who was in your shoes five weeks ago?

“I was on the fence about signing up for this. I know what to do, I do know how to eat healthy. I definitely learned some new things. While I knew how to eat healthy before, the trays make just make it so idiot proof and it’s so easy. I’m really glad I did it. Like I said, I used to graze all day and eat small meals here and there. Now I just eat three times a day I feel totally full and satisfied – I don’t even have the urge to snack. I’m really glad I did it, I feel like it’s going to help me in the long term.”

Kimberly “The results are in your lifestyle. I sleep better, I feel better, I’m performing better.”

Kimberly recently completed our five week nutrition challenge and in five weeks she lost 6.4 lbs, decreased her body fat by 2.4% and lost 3.5 inches. Not only did Kimberly lose weight, but she was able to improve her athletic performance by leveling up in workouts and getting some new PR’s in the gym. Kimberly’s full interview with Coach Brian is below!

Introduce Yourself

“Hi I’m Kimberly Cerasi and I’ve been here for three years.”

You have done the nutrition challenge a bunch of times. We are completing today your latest nutrition challenge, why did you sign up again?

“Because I have done it, this is my third time now, I know the results I got in the first two. Not that I was in a bad place, but I needed a little kick start to get even better and I wanted to perform better in workouts. I have already seen the results after five weeks. The proof is in the numbers, it works.”

Tell us about some of your successes(with the challenge).

“I lost 6.4 lbs, down 2.4% body fat and I lost 3.5 inches, but that’s just the number part of it. The results are in your lifestyle, I sleep better, I’m feeling better, I’m performing better – I’m lifting weights that I couldn’t do five weeks ago. Overall it’s lifechanging. I mean that sounds wonky, but it really is.”

Maybe somebody is watching and they don’t know how we would measure performance. Give us an example of something that you have PR’d or improved upon.

“In just five week’s I’ve leveled up in four different areas. I’m deadlifting more, I can do strict chin ups. My power cleans are heavier, just today I used a heavier dumbbell than I have ever used before, without a problem. There is just so many area’s I’ve improved in, in just five weeks – it’s amazing.”

Obviously you get all those PR results and the measurement results that have all gone in the right direction – any results that you have that we wouldn’t notice?

“Just your mindset, your coming into a workout feeling better, you had a good nights sleep. Just the overall performance, it’s amazing what good food does.”

You have overcome a lot of obstacles in previous challenges, was there any specific obstacles that you were really hoping to get past this go around?

“I knew what I was getting into. For me, I saw the change in my body composition, with the loss of the bad body fat and I want to gain muscle. It’s not just that, its knowing that I can perform better because of the clean food I’m putting in. You know what you have to do, this just makes it real. These are true results because of what you are putting into your body.”

You’ve had success again, what were the top contributing factors this go around?

“Well this time, I knew what I was getting into and I focused on really concentrating on the right foods. I know that you can eat a starchy carb, it could be a whole wheat muffin, but I know that fruit or sweet potato is a better option. Once you start this – you start craving the better options.”

Somebody is sitting at home, wanting to improve their performance, wanting to improve their body composition, what do you tell them?

“Walk in the door and just try this. You’ve got nothing to lose but weight and everything to gain.”

Emilia “I feel happier when I wake up and motivated everyday.”

Emilia recently completed our five week nutrition challenge where she lost 5.7 lbs and decreased her body fat by 1.3%! Emilia talked with Coach Brian to discuss her results from the challenge. See their full conversation below!

Emilia’s Nutrition Success Story

What was your favorite part of the challenge?

“Connecting with my Mom a lot more and feeling happier when I woke up and motivated everyday, I wasn’t really before.”

“Why did you join the nutrition challenge?”

“I joined because I didn’t feel like I was seeing results from just doing CrossFit 3 times a week. “

Tell us a little bit about your successes over the last five weeks.

“I’m pretty happy with the results.

What was the first sign that you were making progress?

“Probably the halfway point. When I saw that I lost a few pounds I wasn’t expecting that at all. I know that my stomach felt a lot better, but I didn’t think that I lost any weight from it.”

When you signed up for the challenge were you hoping to lose weight or for your stomach to feel better? What was the main reason that you wanted to join?

“The number one reason was because of my stomach and losing weight was just a plus from it.”

Were there other results that we wouldn’t know about that you were happy with? (For example, better sleep)

“I do the morning classes for CrossFit and I always used to have go home, shower and take a nap for 2-3 hours before I go into work, I’m there until 10:30pm at night. Now I don’t really need to nap because I have the energy.”

What was the biggest obstacle we helped you overcome during the challenge?

I always had quick processed foods and now I learned to like prep everything beforehand.

During the 5 weeks, what do you think the top factors were to help you be successful?

Probably the people in the FaceBook group, just pushing. Also, I feel like Vanessa and Tommy were really on point with the meetings. Everything they talked about, it hit me, like last week the stress one, I really needed that. It was good timing with everything.

If there is someone sitting at home in the same shoes as you were five weeks ago – what would you tell them about the nutrition challenge?

“That it works. I was skeptical about it because I didn’t think that I could be strict with myself but because everybody else doing it with me and talking about it with me. It helped a lot.”

So you feel like the group component with other people doing it with you was helpful?

“Yeah, and my Mom also trying to do it with me. If it was just me in the house I probably wouldn’t have been able to do it, but she was doing it with me.”

Anything else that you want to add?

“I want to thank everyone for helping me out along the way.”

Kristen : “I’m in the groove and I’m really enjoying this and really starting to push myself”

CrossFit Jungle Gym athlete Kristen talked with Coach James about her progress over the last 90 days.

Introduce Yourself

Hey my name is Kristen Simms and I have been a member here at CrossFit Jungle Gym since the end of August.

Tell us a little about your success over the last 90 days

“So as I was just telling James, I’m really starting to feel a part of the community here. The community was very welcoming coming in the beginning but making a routine out of it and coming consistently, making connections with being able to talk about workouts with people. Learning and making new friends with the nutrition challenge. This 90 days has really blossomed into a significant portion of my life which is really exciting.”

What was a recent sign of progress that you thought wow this stuff is really starting to kick in?

“I think when we did some level method stuff two weeks ago and actually putting blue and purple in there, it was really exciting. One of those was Annie, James pushed me to do it RX and I finished at 10:30. That was pretty exciting.”

What is the biggest obstacle we helped you get over these last 90 days?

“It’s mostly mental for me, I tweaked my arm a couple days ago, I missed 2 days, but those two days were like torture because I couldn’t come. I’m in the groove and I’m really enjoying this and really starting to push myself and missing it is really an impact on me so that’s exciting.”

There is another Kristen out there that’s sitting there saying ” I don’t know”, what do you say to her?

“Come! You’re going to get addicted, you’re going to love it and you’re going to see results. I was getting dressed in the mirror this morning put on my sports bra, looked at myself and I was like not too bad, looking a little better these days. Step in the door, come on in and soon it will be a huge part of your life and you’ll kinda wonder why you weren’t doing it in the first place. “

Kenny “I’m a lot stronger. I’m feeling better physically.”

Kenny’s story about why he is getting fit and how it’s going.

CFJG athlete Kenny Garcia recently chatting with Coach James about coming to CrossFit to get in good shape for his kidney transplant and how he has improved over the last 60 days.

Introduce Yourself

“My name is Kenny Garcia”

Why did you come to CrossFit Jungle Gym?

Initially I started because I’m in the process of getting a kidney transplant so I wanted to be in good physical condition for the transplant. Just wanted to be in better shape.

Tell us a little bit about your success over the last 60 days.

I mean it’s great, I’m a lot stronger, I’m getting through he workouts with a lot more ease. I’m doing more rounds – I’m feeling physically better. I had some joint pain that I was dealing with and it seems to be going away as my muscles are getting stronger. It’s great.

What was that first sign of progress?

I guess when I did one workout and I felt like I wasn’t going to die.

What was the biggest obstacle we helped you overcome during these first 60 days?

Just repetition. I struggled through the first few workouts when you had to go for 20 minutes. Now even though it’s still hard, I can get through it.

There is another Kenny out there in the world, they are wathcing this video. What do you say to them about CFJG?

He’s coming in here as soon as he can. It’s fitness, it’s a big part of being healthy – just living a good life.

What’s next on the list to accomplish?

I just want to keep moving up in levels. After my surgery and I come back I want to focus on getting stronger and building up muscle. I’ll focus on doing heavier weights when we do the workouts to make sure I’m keeping the right form and doing things right. Just to level up and go heavy.
