Fear of Traveling

When preparing to travel many of us get nervous about flying on a plane. Maybe you’ve experienced the fear of something going wrong mid-flight, or the fear of your children ruining the flight for everyone, or maybe you’ve fear whether you will physically be able to sit comfortably on the plane due to your weight.

Personally, I am not too fond of flying and over the years my main reasons for not enjoying it have shifted or changed. I’m certain that I lost sleep over my most recent trip. It was my first time traveling with a baby and I was petrified of her needing something that I couldn’t provide on the plane, and of her potential behavior that may make the flight that other passengers paid for less enjoyable for them.

Despite my many apprehensions, we booked the trip and we all made it there and back! What was the secret to leaving my fear behind you ask? I did everything in my power to create the outcome I desired. When it comes to something going wrong mid-flight, in many cases there aren’t many solutions for a problem like that within our grasp. One thing I’ve learned over the years is to determine what I can control and to focus on that. I did the basic stuff in the instance something tragic happened like made sure the life insurance policies/last will and testament were up to date, told those around me that I love them, and got some other items in order before departing.

I can’t control the “what ifs” that might take place, but I can control the parts of my life that may be affected. Regarding the fear of my daughter’s comfort/behavior, I loaded up on snacks, toys, adjusted her sleep schedule, doing everything in my power to make sure the flight was as enjoyable as possible for all involved.

When it comes to physically being comfortable on a plane, there are different (or similar) steps we all need to take to get there. For some of us this may mean you ditch the morning coffee to avoid needing to use the airplane bathroom, or for others this may mean losing 10, 20, or 100 pounds to be comfortable. You may look at my examples and say, “Okay, well some of the things you listed sound easier than others”. In my mind, these are all the same. They all require a COMMITMENT to action! For you turning down a cup of coffee may be easy, but for someone like my husband or my friend Sue (she has a coffee tattoo, if you want to gauge her love of it) this would take commitment to saying, “No, thanks”. We all have our own story and starting point. The key here is “starting point”.
